Sermon: Remaking Jesus in Our Image

Voltaire once said, “In the beginning God created man in his own image; then man returned the favor.” This sermon, delivered at Heartland Community Church in Medina, Ohio, on Palm Sunday, looks at the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Although the scene appears to be one of worship and celebration, a closer examination reveals the people of Jerusalem were not worshipping the Messiah whom God had sent, but rather the Messiah of their own expectations. The sermon explores our universal human tendency to remake Jesus in our own image, why we do this, and how to respond when he fails to meet our expectations. In the end you’ll discover why meeting our expectations is the least loving thing Jesus can do.
