Making Sense of the “Bathroom Bills” Pitting Religious Liberty vs. LGBT Rights

States across the South are debating, and in some cases passing, bills preventing equal accommodation protection for gay, lesbian, and transgender people. Some say these bills are designed to protect the religious liberty of business owners who do not wish to participate in supporting things that violate their sincerely held religious beliefs. Others say the bills are a backlash against the Supreme Court’s legalization of same-sex marriage last summer. Christians need to get past the soundbites and understand what’s really happening with these bills, and we need to be asking important questions about how these legislative programs may hurt our neighbors as well as our reputation as followers of Christ.
