There are a number of stories in the bible where God engages in duel; a public showdown to reveal his power and identity. In this message, I look at how the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead follows the pattern of divine duels from the Old Testament. Jesus uses the event as the climax of his ministry. He finally and fully reveals his identity to the watching world, and he calls his followers to shift their faith away from theological principles and onto himself. As Oswald Chambers said, “There is a difference between devotion to a principle and devotion to a person. Jesus Christ never proclaimed a cause; he proclaimed personal devotion to himself.” Through this sermon, you will be challenged to rethink how you engage your faith. Are you building your life around Christian principles or around the person of Christ?
