Forgotten Martyrs: The Smooth Criminal

On March 3, 1986, 14-year-old Martin Shiver was discovered receiving the communion elements wearing a Michael Jackson sequin glove. The item had been smuggled into the service within Shiver’s oversized Bible cover. A church elder hastily removed him from the service, burned the glove, and subjected Shiver to a 12 hour “cleansing” of Carman music. He did not survive. In memory of Martin Shiver’s sacrifice, on the Sunday closest to March 3rd the Christian teenagers of Bulger, Pennsylvania, process silently through the town holding small cups of grape juice in a white sequin glove. The event is known as Smooth Criminal

Sunday.
